Social media has been outraged in Egypt after reports circulated that a number of people attacked medical staff at Quesna Central Hospital in Menoufia Governorate, north of Cairo.
According to local media, and what was spread on social media in Egypt, a citizen and his family attacked nurses and hospital workers, causing the miscarriage of one of them and injuring others.
The incident began after a citizen came with his wife, who was suffering from bleeding, to ask for first aid, but the nurses informed him that the doctor on duty and his team were busy performing surgery and the they asked for x-rays of his wife and some tests and analyzes during the waiting period.
According to testimony from the hospital nursing ward, the women accompanying the patient started threatening the nursing staff, promising to beat them, after which two men entered the women’s ward and beat the nursing staff.
A number of Quesna residents circulated a video clip showing the beating of nursing staff.
Ahmed Al-Najjar said, “This disastrous video took place at Quesna Central Hospital in Menoufia, two hours ago. Patients’ families beat nurses and carbage workers, dragged them to the ground, humiliated them and broke hands and feet.One of them was pregnant and fell.
The incident caused great commotion on the Egyptian street, as it was reported that the citizen involved in the attack was an officer of the armed forces.
Human rights lawyer and member of the National Human Rights Council, Nihad Abu Al-Qumsan, said: “The attacker is an Egyptian army pilot officer, and he and his family members have been referred to the military court “.
For her part, Rania Al-Assal said: “The Egyptian may not rise up for the sake of food or the high price, but the truth that the regime must understand is that we do not accept stupidity.
The defendant’s lawyer
Abdul Hamid Al-Sheikh, the lawyer of the party accused of assaulting the nursing staff of Quesna Central Hospital, revealed the details of the incident.
During a telephone conversation with the “Hazrat Al-Citizen” program broadcast on the Egyptian channel “Al-Hadath Al-Youm”, the sheikh explained: “What happened was broadcast in a way that contradicts the truth.
The sheikh added, “Mass Captain Mustafa was in a private clinic to have a medical examination for her pregnancy and the doctor advised her to go to the nearest hospital.”

He added: ‘My client’s wife was bleeding badly, so Captain Mustafa’s sister made a live broadcast asking for help and assistance, pointing out that her client, accused of assault, went to the hospital after watching the live broadcast. live that was published, and found his family imprisoned”.
He pointed out that his client’s wife had a miscarriage due to medical negligence, which came as a shock to them, especially since they have been waiting for this baby for two years, denying that there was a nurse who miscarried because of them.
Armed forces
For its part, the Armed Forces have released a statement, confirming that they are closely following what has emerged on social media regarding the incident at Quesna Central Hospital.
The statement added: “The military affirms its full respect for the principle of the rule of law and calls on everyone to investigate the accuracy and to wait until the investigation is completed.”
The Egyptian Ministry of Health
For his part, Dr Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, carried out a field visit to Quesna Central Hospital in Menoufia Governorate, as part of his follow-up on the aftermath of the assault on staff members nursing and hospital staff.
During his field visit to Quesna Central Hospital in Menoufia, the Health Minister expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the medical team and said they would not be complacent in preserving their rights.
The health minister told the nursing team: “The state will not allow the dignity of its children to be violated by the medical teams.”
He added: “Verbal or physical abuse of workers in medical facilities is unacceptable and offenders will be held accountable according to the law.”
According to a statement published by the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population on its official Facebook page, through which Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman of the Ministry of Health and Population, explained that the minister met the medical team at the hospital , spoke to the attacked nursing staff and listened to the details of the incident.
Abdul Ghaffar added that the minister confirmed that the wrongdoing of medical teams and workers in the performance of their duties is completely unacceptable, stressing that no violation of medical teams will be allowed and that he will do his best to preserve their rights.
Noting that the House of Representatives is in the process of enacting a medical liability law, which will help set clear rules for dealing with medical teams and preserve patients’ rights.
He explained that the minister had assured the hospital’s nursing team that he was closely following the details of the accident since its occurrence, the measures taken, as well as the ongoing investigation into it, underlining the ministry’s willingness to protect their rights .
Interestingly, immediately after the accident, the Minister instructed the Undersecretary of Menoufia Governorate to go to the hospital, prepare a detailed report on the accident, its causes and circumstances, as well as the injuries sustained by the nursing staff members, and list the damages of the hospital and take legal measures in this regard.
Doctors Union
Dr Hussein Khairy, head of the doctors union, said his full support and that of the doctors union board for the nurses and workers at Quesna Central Hospital who were brutally attacked while carrying out their medical work in the hospital by the of a patient escort, which resulted in the injury of five nurses and three hospital workers.
Menoufia Medical Syndicate
For its part, the Syndicate of Doctors of Menoufia confirmed, through a statement published on its official Facebook page, that the same people attacked the nursing staff of the university hospital after the incident at Quesna Hospital.
And the Doctors Syndicate statement said: “Dr. Haitham Salama, director of the hospital, explained that he knew the patient and her family had gone to Shebin El-Kom Teaching Hospital the same day after visiting Quesna Hospital, and they repeated the attack on medical personnel there, and another report was made on behalf of Shebin El-Kom Teaching Hospital.”
