Quentin Tarantino managed to score high with his last film, Once Upon a Time in Hollwyood. The film lasts about 160 minutes, but according to the director himself, he had to cut out a lot of scenes, including even his favorite scene.
Margot Robbie, who plays an important role in the film, previously announced that there is a 20-hour long version of the film. So, of course, a lot of haircuts had to be done, including Tarantino’s favorite scene.
De scene
This concerns an emotional telephone conversation between Rick Dalton (Leonardo Dicaprio) and the child star Trudi Fraser (Julia Butters). The scene reportedly caused young Julia to burst into tears over and over again, but DiCaprio and Tarantino themselves didn’t hold back either.
As the director says: ”It was by far my favorite scene. The idea that this would not be in the film was unthinkable. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for good scenes to be cut from movies…”
Why
The reason for this? It wouldn’t fit very well into the whole of the movie. Thus Tarantino continues: ”You have to follow a certain line, and everything that falls outside of that, no matter how good that is, has to go… The scene was perfect, but once we were putting the film together, we found that it just wasn’t came into play in the story.”
Film producer David Heyman already said that the scene was so terribly good that if it had made it to the film, Butters would certainly have received an Oscar nomination.
The phone call is part of Tarantino’s novel adaptation of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and who knows, maybe we’ll get to see his director’s cut again.
