Dozens of firefighters responded to a Queens home early Saturday morning to combat a fierce fire that left six members of a family hospitalized.
New York authorities said two officers were also injured during the rescue efforts.
According to local media reports, the fire broke out in a house located on the corner of 73rd Avenue and 166th Street, in Hillcrest. After the firefighters arrived, the second floor of the house was engulfed in flames.
Witnesses reported that the father of the family had left the house, but returned to save his 7-year-old daughter, who was trapped in her room by the fire. This caused her to suffer serious burn injuries.
The father is hospitalized in critical condition. Two other adults and three children, ages 7, 9 and 10, are also receiving medical attention, but their health status was not immediately known.
Meanwhile, the officers injured in the fire suffered smoke inhalation. So far the causes of the accident are unknown.
