For several years, Queen Sonja has been celebrating her birthday privately. She also does this on Monday, when she turns 85, the Royal House informs NTB.
The queen is still active and has a lot of iron in the fire, 54 years after she became part of the Norwegian royal family.
Queen Sonja, born Haraldsen, married the then Crown Prince Harald on August 29, 1968. 22 years later she became queen, when King Olav died in 1991. Queen Sonja then became the first Norwegian queen in 52 years.
Sonja has had a great opportunity to shape her role as queen, where nature and culture are constantly recurring elements in her life.
Cord clipper with “wow” feeling
Recently, she has been responsible for the opening of two monumental museums, namely the Munch Museum and the National Museum. She said the following during the opening of the latter:
– The feeling of “wow” has only grown – until today – and it is still here! she said about the National Museum, where six years ago she laid the foundation stone for the building together with Crown Princess Mette-Marit.
Large parts of the Queen’s personal art collection are currently on display in the Castle’s old stable buildings, where over 100 works are exhibited. She describes art as “an indispensable part of life”, and it is something she has collected since her teens.
Well known are also pictures of the queen to the mountains with wind in her hair. Several hiking trails and nature routes in Norway are named after the queen.
Art educated
The Queen is a graduate of the University of Oslo. There she studied English, French and art history.
She has given birth to two children – Princess Märtha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon.
On the occasion of Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s 18th birthday, she gave a speech to the future monarch. Then she came up with the following advice:
– Hold on to who you are, Ingrid. Dare to think new and open, to do things your own way.
