The last Boeing 747 rolled off the assembly line. Later this aircraft will be used as a cargo aircraft.
Nicknamed Queen of the Skies, the aircraft was built over 53 years with a total of more than 1,570 pieces. The launch of the latest series in Washington state took place on Tuesday.
This aerial jumbo was once a head turner because it has a distinctive second story overhang. It is perhaps the most famous and popular aircraft Boeing has ever built.
The Boeing 747 is even large enough to carry the Space Shuttle from the California landing pad to the Florida launch site. Dan will launch a new type of spacecraft from Virgin Orbit as early as next week.
The 747 was once the choice of the rich and glamorous and even royalty. Many films, including the 1973 James Bond classic “Live and Let Die,” feature airplanes or sets made to look like first-class lounges on the upper decks.
Aside from this use, the 747 as a passenger aircraft has gone out of fashion. Airlines have moved away from fuel-efficient four-engine aircraft.
Rival Airbus killed off its own double-decker jumbo, the A380, in 2019.
Boeing signaled in 2020 that it would stop building the 747, even in kagro form. Why customers prefer the 777 that is fuel efficient or save money by reconditioning 747 passengers into cargo.
Boeing hasn’t built a passenger version of the plane since it delivered the last one to Korean Airlines in 2017. The last 747 will be supplied to Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings which will operate the planes for Swiss logistics firm Kuehne+Nagel.
The last aircraft on Tuesday will be flown to the shop of another Boeing facility for paint and other final details, before being delivered to Atlas early next year.
There are currently only 44 passenger versions of the 747 still in service, according to aviation analyst firm Cirium. More than half, 25 of them, were flown by Lufthansa.
