March 21, 2022 – 11:22 am
RVD, no. 81
Her Majesty Queen Máxima will visit Washington DC and New York from Tuesday 22 to Thursday 24 March to perform her work as the UN Secretary General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA). Key topics are the contribution of (digital) financial inclusion to the economic recovery after the corona pandemic and financial health.
On Wednesday 23 March, Queen Máxima will meet the Minister of Finance, Janet Yellen. They talk about the importance of the measurability of financial health in the policy of governments and regulators. At the initiative of Queen Máxima, the Financial Health Working Group was established in 2020, which describes the theme as follows: ‘Financial health refers to the extent to which a household has control over daily income and expenditure, has the resilience to deal with financial setbacks, is able to achieve financial goals (eg saving for an education) and has confidence in the financial future’. Queen Máxima and Minister Yellen previously met briefly at the G20 summit in Rome (RVD message, 319, 2021).
In Washington, Queen Máxima will also hold talks with representatives of international development organizations with whom she works as UNSGSA, including the heads of the International Monetary Fund, the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor and the General Director of Development Policy of the World Bank Group. In addition, she has an interview with the Acting Comptroller of the Currency. This is an independent body of the Ministry of Finance that supervises the national banks.
On Thursday March 24, Queen Máxima will meet in New York with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, about the importance of her work as UNSGSA. The corona crisis has given this an extra dimension. In addition, there are talks with the UN assistant secretary-general and director of External Relations of the United Nations Development Program and the three co-chairs of the Group of Friends of Financial Inclusion, Indonesia, Peru and Tanzania. Queen Máxima also participates in a round table discussion on the theme of financial health in private sector financial services. The organizer is the Financial Health Network which is a member of the Financial Health Working Group.
