The Danish public eagerly waits in the streets of Copenhagen to greet the Queen one last time. Margrethe unexpectedly announced on Sunday during her New Year’s speech that she will relinquish the throne to her son. “I have decided that this is the right time,” she said in her speech. “On January 14, 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark.” The reason for the resignation is, among other things, the back operation that Margrethe underwent in February. “It went well, thanks to the skilled healthcare staff who took care of me. Naturally, the operation also gave rise to thinking about the future: whether it was time to leave the responsibility to the next generation,” the queen said. Her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik (55), will be her successor. He then becomes King Frederick X.
