Queen Margrethe II Steps Down as Queen of Denmark After 52 Years – Crown Prince Frederik to Ascend Throne

“On January 14, 2024, 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I will leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik,” she said in her televised greeting.

The 83-year-old queen said the back surgery she had this year had left her thinking it might be time to pass on her responsibilities to the next generation.

“I decided that now is the right time. Time passes, and the diseases get worse. You cannot fight them as before,” Queen Margrethe said.

Crown Prince Frederik will become King Frederik X when he ascends the throne.

Queen Margrethe II ascended the throne on January 14, 1972, after the death of her father, King Frederik IX. At the time of her coronation she was 31 years old. Margrethe II reigns the longest of all living monarchs in Europe – more than 50 years.
