Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s Abdication Plans in 2024: Transitioning Throne to Son Prince Frederick X

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, who is 83 years old, revealed that plans to abdicate on January 14, 2024. This announcement was made during her usual New Year’s address to the country on December 31, AFP said.

“I decided now is the right time. On January 14, 2024 – 52 years having succeeded my beloved father – I will retire as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederick,” added the Queen.

In her New Year’s speech, Margrethe II indicated that she underwent extensive back surgery in February this year. She passed successfully thanks to the skilled medical staff who cared for me. Of course, the operation also gave rise to thoughts about the future – whether the time has come to leave the responsibility to the next generationsaid the Danish queen.

Queen Margrethe ended her speech by saying: “Tonight, first of all, I want to thank you. Thank you for the enormous warmth and support I have received over the years. I thank the successive governments, who have always been a pleasure to work with, and the Danish Parliament, who have always welcomed me with confidence.”

“The support and help I have received over the years has been crucial to being able to complete my task. I hope that the new royal couple will be met with the same trust and affection, as I received. They deserve it! Denmark deserves it!” That summed up the Queen.

Margrethe II became ruler of Denmark in 1972 after her father, King Frederik IX, died. For the past 52 years, she has ruled Denmark and led it through remarkable changes in its culture and society, ushering the country into the modern and progressive era.

Margrethe II’s son Prince Frederick will take the throne. He will probably use the name King Frederick X, although this has not yet been announced, and his wife, Crown Princess Mary, will become Queen.

Soon their 18-year-old son, Prince Christian, will become heir to the Danish throne.

In Denmark, official power rests with the elected parliament and its government. The monarch is expected to stand above party politics, representing the nation with traditional duties, ranging from state visits to national holiday celebrations.

Born in 1940, Margrethe II throughout her life enjoyed widespread support from the Danes, who liked her tactful yet creative personality.
