Queen Margrethe Abdicates: What It Means for Denmark and the World

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is looking forward to a new chapter for her country after Queen Margrethe announced her abdication. “We will miss Queen Margrethe, whom we love very much,” Frederiksen said in her New Year’s speech on Monday evening.

She explained that thanks to the Queen (83 years old), the Royal House still exists as an institution.

The Social Democratic Prime Minister added: “I am sure that the Crown Prince will be a good and strong king for Denmark and the entire kingdom.” The Kingdom of Denmark also includes Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Margrethe II’s announcement of her abdication in her annual New Year’s address on Sunday evening came as a complete surprise.

She said she made the decision because of a back operation she had last year, from which she recovered well, but it made her think.

She added, “I have decided that now is the right time,” and announced that she would soon hand over the scepter to her son, Crown Prince Frederick.

Then Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen decided to completely change her speech and instead of focusing on reforms to the social system and health care, she focused on the legacy of the outgoing Queen.
