Recent health changes and Queen Elizabeth’s hospital stay highlight a stressful reality for the UK and the Royal Family. The world was unaware that the Queen had been hospitalized for 24 hours, raising questions about the message behind a real issue that royal staff will face soon enough.
As reported in The Daily Beast, the delay in revealing the hospital visit is creating speculation about what is being hidden or delayed. Combined with recent news about her health and declining duties, some wonder if she would be willing to step down and allow Prince Charles to take her place as Prince Regent until her mother’s death.

This does not appear to be an option for Queen Elizabeth, and she continues to carry on on a daily basis, rushing to her duties in the midst of the pandemic. This included 15 official engagements in October alone, occupied in the wake of the loss of her husband Prince Phillip and the controversy with Prince Harry’s grandson and wife Meghan Markle.
The relationship with her grandchildren seems even warmer than the one she has with Charles and his wife Camilla, of whom she is adamant, does not receive the title of queen although the prince has made it clear his intentions should he become king .
Like The Daily Beast column and other news articles, Charles and the growing division within the country could be the main factors that pushed him to stay in office until the last moment. Brexit, the pandemic and the ever-growing climate change crisis have made Queen Elizabeth the central figure who does not waver amid the choppy waves of history.
On top of all this, the extent of what is required if Queen Elizabeth were to pass away. As reported in The Guardian in 2017, his demise would end the UK in a way that would make the current pandemic tame. It is also likely that the information path from the palace is even more closed than during the fear of the hospital. “The Queen is suffering from a great physical prostration, accompanied by symptoms which cause a lot of anxiety”, writes The Guardian, quoting Sir James Reid following the death of Queen Victoria.
What will become of Queen Elizabeth? Will it continue upward until it turns back to dust and clay? A recent attempt to recognize the monarch as Oldie of the Year in Oldie magazine was “graciously refused” by its staff. “Her Majesty thinks you are as old as you think you are, as such the Queen does not think she meets the relevant criteria to be able to accept, and hopes you will find a more worthy recipient.” ”
