Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral and chapel last year cost the British government an estimated 162 million pounds (about $200 million), Britain’s Treasury revealed on Thursday.
The monarch’s state funeral, held on September 19, was the first in the country since former Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s funeral in 1965.
The event, attended by world leaders and dignitaries, came 10 days after a national mourning for the queen, who died at the age of 96 on September 8 after 70 years on the throne.
Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to Westminster Hall in London to bid farewell to Britain’s longest-serving monarch.
The costs were published on Thursday as part of a statement from Parliament.
“The government’s priorities were that these events proceed smoothly and with the appropriate level of dignity, while ensuring the safety of the public at all times,” Treasury Chief Secretary John Glen wrote in the statement.
Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, were buried in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
Felipe, who died in 2021 at the age of 99, decided not to have a funeral chapel and his funeral was held in private, taking place under strict rules of social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
