“I hope that in the years to come, everyone can be proud of how we have taken up this challenge,” said the queen, according to extracts from her services.
“And those who will succeed us will say that the British of this generation were as strong as the others”, and “that the qualities of self-discipline, benevolent determination and camaraderie always characterize this country”, will add the head of the ‘State during a’ deeply personal ‘speech, according to its services.
This television address, scheduled to air at 7:00 p.m. GMT on Sunday for British and Commonwealth nations, is only Elizabeth II’s fourth speech since the start of her reign 68 years ago.
It shows the gravity of the crisis in the United Kingdom, where the epidemic continues to accelerate.
According to a report published on Saturday, 4,313 people died in hospitals, including a 5-year-old child and several caregivers, and 41,903 positive cases were officially recorded. Among the latter are Crown Prince Charles, now healed, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Elizabeth II’s speech was recorded at Windsor Castle, west of London, where the Queen and her husband Prince Philip have lived since March 19.
Aged 93 and 98 respectively, they are part of the population at risk. Those around them assured that the couple were in good health and were following government directives to remain confined.
The previous three speeches of Elizabeth II in times of crisis or mourning were held in 1991 during the First Gulf War, in 1997 on the eve of Princess Diana’s funeral, and in 2002 after the death of her mother.
In addition, in 2012, Elisabeth II expressed her thanks on television for the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne. She also sends her wishes to the nation every year at Christmas.
On Sunday, the government once again urged the British to respect confinement so as not to contribute to the spread of the new coronavirus and not to be tempted by the mild and sunny weather to stroll outside, in the parks in particular.
People are only allowed to go out to shop, get medical treatment or exercise once a day.
“This is not a request, it is a legal requirement,” said Health Minister Matt Hancock, himself cured of Covid-19, on Sky News.
“Sunbathing is against the rules,” he continued. If “the vast majority” of people respect them, this is still not the case for a “small minority,” he said.
On the BBC, Hancock warned that the executive would not hesitate to toughen the containment if necessary. “My message is very clear: if you don’t want us to ban any form of exercise outside your home, you have to follow the rules.”
Such a move would have the backing of the Labor Party, the main opposition party, said new leader Keir Starmer.
