Even Queen Camilla, wife of King Charles III, sometimes forgets that she is now the highest ranking woman. Princess Kate had to remind her of this during Remembrance Sunday.
Camilla and Kate put on a united front at last week’s highly emotional Remembrance Sunday ceremony. The two folds stood right next to each other on the balcony, and were clearly presented as equals in rank in both look and position. A nice recognition that Kate, like Camilla, is currently one of the most important pillars of the British monarchy.
But of course Kate will have to wait a little longer before she can call herself Queen. Camilla is indeed higher in rank at the moment, and that comes with rules, although she sometimes forgets that herself. After the ceremony, the queen turned to leave, but she appeared to be waiting for Kate. According to insiders, the two would get along well, and Camilla – who until recently also had princess rank herself – wanted to let her daughter-in-law go first out of politeness.
The princess, who knows from years of experience that she must always let the Queen go first, gave her a subtle nod and said “After you”. Camilla gave her a broad smile of gratitude when she realized that she had to go first.
“It’s small things,” insiders said. “But since Elizabeth’s death, many royals have still not fully realized that their roles are now different, even the Queen. Fortunately, Camilla has a lot of support from Kate, who will never exceed her limits and will therefore never do things to which she is not yet entitled, according to protocol.”
