Quebec Property Sales Drop by 23.7% in 2023 – Owners Struggling to Pay Mortgages

According to Statistics Quebec, which has just revealed data for the year 2023 regarding the sale of properties, the number of transactions fell by 19.9% ​​in Mauricie compared to 2022, going from 7,609 to 6,096. t’s no better south of the St. Lawrence River, where fewer than 5,000 residences have changed owners, a decrease of 20.1% compared to 2022.

For all of Quebec, the drop in sales is 23.7%, with 149,431 in 2023 compared to nearly 195,907 in 2022.

The data provided by Statistics Quebec also shows that more owners are having difficulty paying their mortgage. The number of acts of financial difficulty increased by 13% in Mauricie, by more than 57% in Centre-du-Québec and by 38.9% in all of Quebec.

“It could be a failure to pay a mortgage or a property tax, a bankruptcy or a seizure,” explains Statistiques Québec.
