Yamaha’s 2024 MT-09 Y-AMT: A Game Changer in Motorcycle Technology
Yamaha Motor co.,Ltd.has shaken up the motorcycle world with the introduction of its innovative 2024 MT-09 Y-AMT, a model that seamlessly blends the thrill of manual shifting with the convenience of an automatic transmission. This groundbreaking technology, dubbed the Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT), marks a significant leap forward in rider experience and control.
The Y-AMT system offers riders a unique duality. They can choose between a customary manual transmission (MT), operated via a thumb and index finger-activated button on the left handlebar, or a fully automatic transmission (AT) mode for effortless gear changes. Importantly, neither mode requires a clutch lever or foot pedal, simplifying the riding experience for both seasoned veterans and newcomers alike.
To showcase the capabilities of the new MT-09 Y-AMT, Yamaha invited MotoGP stars Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins for a test ride through the picturesque Pre-Pyrenees mountain roads. Their feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
“It’s amazing how agile the bike is,” said Alex Rins.
“It’s great, switching gears is fun too,” added quartararo.
Both riders praised the smoothness and precision of the Y-AMT gearbox, highlighting its responsiveness and intuitive operation. Even the occasional eager wheelie was noted as a testament to the bike’s performance and handling.
The MT-09 Y-AMT isn’t just a technological marvel; it retains all the performance characteristics that have made the MT-09 a class leader. The powerful 890cc CP3 triple engine delivers 117 bhp at 10,000 rpm, ensuring a thrilling ride.Yamaha has confirmed that the Y-AMT technology will be rolled out to other models in their lineup in the future, promising a revolution in motorcycle technology across their range.
While Rins and Quartararo celebrated their test ride, their focus will soon shift back to the upcoming pre-season MotoGP test in Sepang, Malaysia, in early February 2025. There, they will continue their efforts to refine the Yamaha M1 and close the performance gap against their european competitors.
