After an exciting sprint race, qualifying was scheduled in China. Max Verstappen finished in first place in Q1, while local hero Guanyu Zhou, Kevin Magnussen, Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda and Logan Sargeant were equally eliminated. Sergio Perez narrowly advanced to Q2.
In that session, Carlos Sainz flew off the track. The Ferrari driver made a mistake in the last corner, but was able to continue on his way with no damage. Verstappen was again the fastest. Lance Stroll, Daniel Ricciardo, Esteban Ocon, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly were out.
Verstappen was also unstoppable in Q3. The reigning world champion convincingly took pole position and was much faster than Perez and Fernando Alonso. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri completed the top five.
