Qualcomm will only be able to supply Huawei with older 4G chips

Recently it became known that Qualcomm allegedly received permission to supply processors under the sanctions of Huawei. After that, in the hearts of fans of the Chinese company’s products, the hope that the future flagship Huawei P50 will be able to leave with a single-chip Snapdragon 875 system. But, apparently, this will not happen. Investment bank KeyBanc clarified that the export license deals only with 4G chips, while Snapdragon 875 is a 5G processor.

Taking into account the fact that all new flagship smartphones are released with support for fifth generation networks, such a resolution is much less valuable for it. The inability to sell 5G phones will negatively affect Huawei’s position in the market, as it was considered one of the leaders in the 5G industry. However, other than the resumption of cooperation with Qualcomm, even on such conditions, it most likely has no other option. Being left without processors means Huawei will soon leave the smartphone market.

Of course, there is also TSMC, which, according to preliminary data, also restored the right to cooperate with Huawei. But, according to some sources, its export license implies the supply of chips manufactured only according to old technological standards, and not using 7- and 5-nanometer lithographic processes.

Huawei itself, if it builds its own microcircuit plant in Shanghai, at first will be able to produce only 45-nanometer chips on it, and the transition to 28- and 20-nm technical processes will become possible within the next two years.
