Qualcomm wants to overtake Apple in 2022

It was initially just a rumor, and it’s now official: Qualcomm will take on Apple’s ARM chips and produce its own processors for laptop makers. In an interview given to Reuters, the CEO of the company said his company would be ready as early as next year with the first models capable of competing with the Apple M1 chip. Cristiano Amon added that he intends to produce a better chip than Apple, mentioning the buyout from startup Nuvia Inc at the beginning of the year. The company, which specializes in the development of custom ARM processors, was created by three former Apple engineers in charge of the Ax chips for the iPhone.

Qualcomm is a major partner of Apple for the iPhone 5G modem, but this partnership is set to end with the development of Apple’s first 5G modem which could be finalized in 2023. Qualcomm has a long history in chip design involves considerable resources and must therefore be taken seriously. If successful, this initiative could have beneficial effects for Apple, which has every interest in seeing the entire industry adopt the ARM architecture recently integrated into the Mac with the Apple Silicon project.
