Qualcomm announces new smart home chips with Wi-Fi 6 and RISC-V support

Qualcomm has unveiled two new chips for Internet of Things (IoT) devices used in smart home devices.

For those who don’t know

The Internet of Things is a system of devices that are connected to the Internet and can exchange data. These can be smart thermostats, security cameras, locks or other devices that make our lives more convenient and automated.

What is known

According to the company’s latest report, sales of IoT products totaled $1.7 billion in the fourth quarter, twice as much as the automotive sector.

The new RISC-V based QCC74xM chip is a programmable connectivity module that supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, Thread and Zigbee. It is ideal for smart home hubs and devices that require high-speed connections and data exchange via Ethernet and CAN.

The second chip, QCC730M, is designed for battery-powered devices such as security cameras or smart locks. It features a 60MHz processor and hardware acceleration for cryptographic security.

Both chips are available to developers as samples, with commercial availability expected in the first half of 2025.
