The 44-year-old driver of the double-cab car involved in the quadruple fatal accident that occurred on New Year’s Day in Limassol was placed under six-day detention on Tuesday morning. The procedure took place at the Limassol hospital where the driver is being treated under guard.
The 44-year-old is suspected of offenses involving causing death by negligence and violating a traffic light. The court was told the circumstances under which the terrible traffic accident occurred which resulted in the death of Vathoulas Georgiou, 27, and her brother, Nikolas Georgiou, 17, from Limassol, their grandfather, Nikolas Zavrou, 73, and their grandmother, Evanthia Georgiou 74 years old from Limnati.
The investigator of the case referred, among other things, to the testimonies that the police have collected so far, both from drivers who were in the area at the time of the accident, and from other people involved. Video from the closed circuit surveillance of an adjacent gas station is also being evaluated, in which the 44-year-old man appears to be violating the red traffic light of the light-controlled junction where the traffic accident occurred, before the collision with the car driven by the unfortunate 27-year-old woman.
In his request, the investigator also referred to the investigative work that remains to be done, the statements expected to be taken, the reconstruction of the traffic accident and other tests that remain to be done to complete the investigations. It is worth noting that the court was told that the 44-year-old claims that he did not violate the traffic light and that he passed through the green light.
The traffic accident happened half an hour after the arrival of 2024, on the Limassol-Platron road. The double-cab vehicle which was heading north on Giannou Kranidiotis Street, under circumstances that are being investigated, collided with the private vehicle driven by the 27-year-old woman, which was heading south on the same road. The severe collision occurred when the young woman was attempting a right turn on Agia Anastasia Street. From the collision the death of the four occupants of the small car was instantaneous. The driver and passenger of the double cab car were injured and are being treated at the Limassol hospital.
