Quadrantid Meteor Shower January 4, 2022, Here Are 4 Facts

Jakarta

Quadrantid Meteor Shower will be visible on January 4, 2022. The Quadrantid Meteor Shower is one of the largest annual meteor showers.

Check out information about the Quadrantid Meteor Shower that we have summarized below.

Getting to know the Quadrantid Meteor Shower

According to the NASA website, Quadrantid Meteor Shower comes from the dust remnants of the asteroid 2003 EH1. Asteroid 2003 EH1 takes 5.52 years to orbit the sun once. It is possible that 2003 EH was a “dead comet” or a new type of object being discussed by astronomers called a “rock comet”.

The Quadrantid Meteor Shower is also known for its bright fireball meteors. Fireballs are larger bursts of light and color that can last longer than the average meteor. This is due to the fact that the fireballs originate from larger particles of material.

The Beginning of Quadrantid Meteor Rain

Reporting from the NASA website, the Quadrantid Meteor Shower was first seen in 1825. The meteor shower came from an obsolete constellation called “Quadrans Muralis”.

French astronomer Jerome Lalande created this constellation in 1795. However, at this time Quadrans Muralis is no longer included in the list of modern constellations of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) because it is considered obsolete.

The Quadrans Muralis is located between the constellations Bootes and Draco. Therefore, the alternative name for the Quadrantid Meteor Shower is Bootid because the meteor appears to be emanating from the modern constellation Bootes.

Quadrantid Meteor Shower: Peak On January 4

Quoted from the NASA website, the peak of the Quadrantid Meteor Shower falls in early January every year. Most meteor showers have a peak of 2 days, however, the peak of the Quadrantid Meteor Shower is much shorter, only a few hours.

Reporting from the LAPAN website, the peak of the Quadrantid Meteor Shower can be seen on January 4, 2022 from the Northeast at 04.00 am local time until 25 minutes before sunrise. At this point, the Quadrantid Meteor Shower falls with an intensity of 200 meteors/hour.

However, because the height of this meteor shower is different from Sabang to Rote Island, the intensity can also be different. The peak intensities of the Quadrantid meteor showers range from:

  • Sabang (35.8°): 117 meteors/hour
  • Rote Island (16.3 °): 56 meteors/hour

How to See the Quadrantid Meteor Shower

The Quadrantid Meteor Shower is best seen in the Northern Hemisphere at night and in the early morning. Reporting from CNN, to see the Quadrantid Meteor Shower, find an area that is far from the city or street lights.

Quadrantid Meteor Shower can be seen every few minutes from late at night until dawn. Without moonlight, this phenomenon can be seen with the naked eye. However, make sure the sky is clear and free of light pollution and the terrain is free of obstructions.
