The Los Angeles Rams remain vague when it comes to the future of their starting quarterback Jared Goff.
Ram’s general manager Les Snead only went so far on Tuesday saythat Goff is “a ram right now”.
Head coach Sean McVay gave a similar answer after the team’s playoff knockout.
“I’m not ready to make any statements about a starting position … We will have a degree of competition in everything we do,” said McVay.
Rather than giving a more specific answer to Goff’s future, Snead chose to refer instead to the quote from Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers that the future is a “beautiful mystery”.
The general manager added that he would like the team to get better on offense next season.
Goff made 67% of his passes during the regular season, collecting 3,953 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The first draft pick in 2016 struggled towards the end of the season.
He sustained a thumb injury in Week 16, but returned in the wild card game against the Seattle Seahawks when substitute John Wolford was eliminated with an injury of his own. Goff led the Rams past their NFC West rivals, but was left behind in the Divisional Round against the Packers. He finished the game with 174 passing yards and a touchdown.
The Rams gave Goff a $ 134 million contract in 2019. If they fire Goff this season, they’ll suffer a $ 65.5 million dead cap hit, the number being loud Spotrac drops to $ 30.9 million the following year.
Snead said Goff’s salary could be a barrier to any transaction in the future, but added that “anything is possible”.
