Doha seeks to obtain one million doses of coronavirus vaccines for fans who will attend the 2022 World Cup organized in Qatar, the official QNA agency said on Sunday.

“Due to the possibility that some countries may not be able to vaccinate all their citizens … we are in negotiations with a company to supply us with one million doses,” said Prime Minister Sheikh Khaled ben Khalifa al- Thani, without specifying the name of the laboratory, according to QNA.

“Qatar will not authorize fans who are not fully vaccinated to enter its stadiums,” he added, specifying that the objective of the authorities is “to protect citizens and residents, vaccinating some of those who come to Qatar for the World Cup.”

The wealthy Gulf emirate has progressively lowered existing sanitary restrictions in favor of a mass vaccination campaign. According to the prime minister, more than 70% of the 2.75 million inhabitants received at least one dose. Since the start of the pandemic, Qatar had 220,800 cases, with 583 deaths.

In April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed ben Abderrahmane al-Thani, had already indicated that the country was in talks with vaccine producers to ensure that all fans who come to attend the World Cup have been vaccinated against covid-19 .
