Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the EU condemn the aggression against UN peace bases

Doha. Qatar and Saudi Arabia yesterday condemned the Israeli decision to confiscate the land of the headquarters of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem, the European Union demanded a “thorough” investigation into Israel’s attacks on the Forces United Nations Peace Program in Lebanon (Finul) that Italy described as “unacceptable.”

The Qatari Foreign Ministry denounced the occupation of the UNRWA headquarters as part of a “systematic campaign” by the Israeli authorities to “settle the issue of Palestinian refugees and their right to return to their homes.” He recalled that return is recognized by international law.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry expressed “its condemnation and denunciation in the strongest terms against this decision taken by the occupying authorities of Israel”, which converts the land into a “settlement outpost” of the occupied territory and which in the future intends house 1,400 homes.

In a statement, the EU said that “these attacks against peacekeeping soldiers” constitute a “serious violation of international law and must stop immediately.”

The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, a strong ally of Tel Aviv, in a telephone conversation with her Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, “reiterated the unacceptable nature of the Israeli attacks on the UNIFIL” and stressed that she is acting under the “mandate of the Security Council to contribute to regional stability.”

Pope Francis made statements in similar terms.

Gilad Cohen, Israel’s ambassador to Japan, criticized the comments of one of the presidents of the Japanese NGO Nihon Hidankyo, made up of survivors of the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and winner of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, who compared the devastation of the atomic bomb and the current situation in Gaza.

This was expressed by the co-president of the NGO, Toshiyuki Mimaki, during a press conference in Hiroshima after receiving the announcement of the award. “In Gaza they are hugging children soaked in blood. After the war, many were orphaned by the atomic bombs, the same suffering as that of the children of the enclave.”

The Palestinian National Authority applauded the recent position of the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, in favor of an arms embargo destined for Israel for use in the war against Hamas.

The Palestinian government asked other countries to join this initiative as a measure of pressure against “the occupying State”, in reference to Israel, “to end its genocidal war” against its people.

Ireland denounced the “horrible scenes” observed in the Jabaliya refugee camp, in northern Gaza.
