Qatar: Reviewing its role in Israel-Hamas negotiations – 2024-04-17 23:57:48

Qatar is reviewing its role as a mediator between Israel and Hamas, the prime minister of the Gulf country, which is playing a key role in talks on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, announced today.

“We are in the process of completely reviewing our role” because some politicians are abusing that role to advance their own goals, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said at a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan .

His country would take “in due course a decision” on whether or not to continue to be involved in the talks, he added.

Recently, Qatar reacted angrily to a statement by US Democratic Congressman Steny Hoyer who asked it to put pressure on Hamas. Hoyer said Qatar should signal to Hamas that there will be “repercussions” if the Palestinian organization blocks “progress” on a temporary ceasefire and the release of hostages held in Gaza. Qatar described the attitude of the American politician as “unconstructive”.
