Qatar, one of the world’s largest suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), has announced plans to significantly increase its production capacity to meet the surging demand from China and other Asian nations. This move comes as Qatar recently discovered vast new gas reserves, prompting the Gulf state to bet on the continued strong demand for LNG in the region.
The plans, which build upon previous announcements of production increases, will result in an overall production capacity rise of almost 85% from current levels by the end of the decade. Qatar’s energy minister, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, expressed optimism about the future of the country’s gas industry, stating that the plans will “take Qatar’s gas industry to new horizons.”
Currently, Qatar has the capacity to produce approximately 77 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG. However, it has already announced plans to expand this capacity to 126 mtpa by 2027. With the latest announcement, QatarEnergy, the state-owned energy company, will add a further 16 mtpa before the end of the decade, bringing the total capacity to 142 mtpa.
The decision to increase LNG production capacity is driven by the rising demand for cleaner energy sources in Asia. As countries in the region strive to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, they are shifting away from coal and turning to natural gas as a lower-carbon alternative. This trend has been further accelerated by Europe’s efforts to replace lost Russian pipeline volumes following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to a report by oil and gas supermajor Shell, global demand for LNG is expected to increase by more than 50% by 2040, reaching between 625 million and 685 million tonnes. The report also predicts continued growth in LNG demand throughout the next decade as China and other developing Asian nations transition from coal to gas.
Qatar’s strategic focus on meeting the growing demand from Asia is evident in its recent gas supply deals with China. Over the past 15 months, Qatar has secured two significant agreements with Chinese companies, including a 27-year deal to sell 4 million tonnes of LNG per year to China National Petroleum Corporation and a similar deal with Sinopec.
While Qatar expands its LNG production capacity, the United States has put a pause on approving new LNG terminals along its coastline. President Biden stated that the country needs to take a “hard look at the effects of LNG exports on energy costs, America’s energy security, and our environment.” This review reflects the US government’s concerns about energy security and the carbon footprint associated with LNG exports.
