Qatar wants to review its investments in London and possibly move to other cities in England. The country is angry that London is rejecting Qatari advertising on public transport.
Already three years ago, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan asked Transport of London (underground, buses and taxis) not to simply allow advertising and sponsorship deals from countries with laws against the LGBT community. These countries include Pakistan, Brunei, Saudi Arabia and also Qatar.
That’s why Transport of London (TfL) this week banned a number of adverts from Qatar in the wake of the World Cup. TfL also referred to Qatar’s treatment of foreign workers.
According to financial time Qatar is quite angry about this. The newspaper writes that Qatar wants to review its investments in London and possibly move to other cities and other countries. The unofficial position is that “Qatar has noted it is not welcome in London”.
Qatar is one of the biggest investors in London. Qatar Investment Authority owns the famous Harrods store, the famous Shard building and co-owns Canary Wharf. Qatar also owns The Savoy and Grosvenor House hotels and owns 20% of the shares in Heathrow Airport.
