Qatar Airways announced, on Wednesday, that it made profits of $ 1.2 billion during the past year, supported by its role in transporting fans to the FIFA World Cup.
The long-haul airline added that its revenue increased to $21 billion, up 45 percent from the previous year. The annual passenger number reached 31.7 million, up 71 percent.
The company said it carried 1.4 million passengers to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. It has also expanded its network to more than 160 destinations.
Qatar Airways operates out of a shiny new airport in the Qatari capital, Doha, and competes with long-haul airlines Emirates and Etihad, which operate out of the neighboring Emirates.
Qatar Airways succeeded in passing the most difficult months of the pandemic, with the support of $3 billion from the Qatari government. Its main competitor, Dubai’s flagship airline Emirates, also received billions of dollars in payments from the Dubai government during the pandemic. The two companies serve as economic pillars of their countries, which depend heavily on tourists and transit passengers.
The Qatar Airways brand is familiar to European football fans, as it has partnerships with Paris Saint-Germain. And in the United States, it has a business partnership with the Brooklyn Nets.
