Middle Eastern Nations Pledge Billions for indonesian Housing Initiative
Indonesia is set to recieve a massive boost in its efforts to combat its housing shortage, thanks to significant financial commitments from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).The initiative, confirmed by Indonesia’s Housing task Force, promises to deliver millions of new homes to Indonesian citizens.
The scale of the commitment is unprecedented. According to Hashim Djojohadikusumo, chief of the Housing Task Force, “According to President Prabowo subianto, the Qatari government is ready to fund the development of five million homes. Meanwhile, a Qatari philanthropist has also expressed readiness to fund one million homes personally.” This substantial investment, coupled with another pledge, brings the total number of homes possibly funded to seven million.
The UAE is also playing a crucial role. Djojohadikusumo added, “During my visit to Abu Dhabi (in UAE), the Abu Dhabi government declared its readiness to help (for the development of) one million housing units.” This collaborative effort represents a significant step towards achieving the Indonesian government’s ambitious goal of constructing 15 million housing units within the next five years.
The news has been met with optimism. Djojohadikusumo expressed confidence that the Indonesian government’s ambitious housing targets are now within reach, thanks to this international partnership. He also praised the collaborative efforts of the central government and local authorities in addressing the housing crisis.
The announcement was made during a Christmas charity event at the Rawa Buaya public residential complex in West Jakarta, where Djojohadikusumo and Housing and Settlement Minister Maruarar Sirait interacted with residents. Sirait emphasized the importance of unity, stating, “You all have different backgrounds, but you are all Indonesians. I wish to convey this message from our president that you all must live in harmony.”
This initiative not only addresses a critical housing shortage but also holds significant implications for poverty reduction and improved living standards across Indonesia. The influx of foreign investment highlights the growing international focus on sustainable development and global partnerships to tackle pressing social issues.
The success of this project will be closely watched, not only in Indonesia but also globally,as a model for international cooperation in addressing housing challenges in developing nations. The scale of the investment underscores the seriousness of the housing crisis and the potential for significant positive impact on the lives of millions of Indonesians.
