Q-uestion: Summer Event in Herpen to Discuss Q Fever Outbreak and its Ongoing Consequences for Victims

Herpen (Oss): Q-uestion, a foundation for people with Q fever, is organizing a summer event on the village square of Herpen.

Around 2006, a dangerous bacterial epidemic broke out in the Netherlands, resulting in 116 deaths and 1,500 chronically ill patients. The largest outbreak of the Coxiella Burnetii bacteria in the world caused the zoonotic disease Q fever in humans and left deep scars for those affected. On this summer afternoon, in the presence of the King’s Commissioner in North Brabant and the mayor of the municipality of Oss, the outbreak will be reviewed and the loss and impact will be discussed.

During this afternoon, current knowledge is also shared and the future is looked at. Emeritus professor Manu Keirse talks about the impact; physician-researcher Ruud Raijmakers talks about new scientific research into the neurobiological and immunological comparisons in patients with post-COVID and other post-infectious consequences; Beer Advocaten from Amsterdam talks about new developments in the proceedings of the 297 Q fever victims against the state. The afternoon will be musically framed by Trijntje Oosterhuis and Douwe Bob.

The consequences for the victims are still ongoing and their situation is deteriorating. There is no treatment and very little understanding from authorities. Recent research by Erasmus MC shows that there are an average of 17 health complaints in a patient. Four out of five patients can no longer work and financial problems have arisen. The influence is greatest on family life, on sexuality and on the relationship with a partner. 70% experience emotional pain, sadness or grief and many suffer from the lack of recognition.*
