Tensions on the Korean Peninsula. For the first time, a North Korean ballistic missile landed in South Korean territorial waters. Seoul called the launch a “territorial invasion”.

Pyongyang had never launched so many missiles in a single day – 23 in total. In response, Seoul launched three F-16 jet air-to-surface missiles. They also fell over the dividing line between the two warring sides. Then, in turn, North Korea fired more than 100 artillery shells.

Pyongyang has explained its actions with joint exercises with its neighbors and the US military. North Korea called them “aggressive and provocative”. They threatened that the people involved would pay “the most terrible price in history”. And the United States said Pyongyang was making noise to hide something else: the supply of missiles to the Russian military.

“These actions by North Korea threaten the peace and stability of Japan, the region and the international community and are completely unacceptable. They violate the resolutions of the UN Security Council. We strongly condemn North Korea and have issued a protest officer against these actions. We will examine all options without excluding anything, including the ability to counterattack. We will continue to work to fundamentally strengthen our defense capabilities, “said Yasukazu Hamada, Japanese defense minister.
