Mexico CityWith President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexico began a process of reconfiguration of politics and public life, within the framework of a process that will continue with the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, whose figure becomes relevant in the study and fight against climate change and its harmful effects, highlighted the coordinator of the PVEM bench in the Chamber of Deputies, Carlos Alberto Puente.
In outlining the position of the Green Party legislators at the San Lázaro Legislative Palace, within the framework of the delivery of López Obrador’s sixth and final government report, Puente pointed out that “the 66th Legislature will be historic, because it will hand over the presidential sash to the first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum,” which “marks the beginning of a new stage of democratic development.”
The Zacatecan highlighted that in the elections of June 2, “a great alliance was consolidated between the Green Party, Morena and the PT,” whom he recognized as part of a coalition that “came to transform Mexico and give it direction for many more years.”
After highlighting that the PVEM obtained 5 million votes in the last elections and won 57 of the 300 electoral districts in the country, “almost double the number won by the PAN,” Puente responded to criticism from his party’s detractors, who claim that it has no agenda of its own or environmental achievements.
“We remind you that we have promoted almost 80 percent of the current environmental legislation, and we have pushed for laws that include the one that recognizes the right to a healthy environment, the one on the principle of environmental responsibility, the one on integrated waste management and the Climate Change Law,” among others.
In addition to environmental issues, the PVEM has also promoted reforms in the areas of health, education, security, employment, youth and work, said Puente, who stressed that the most important of these initiatives is the one related to elevating social welfare programs to constitutional status.
“Since the pensions and welfare grants began to be distributed, the Greens have voted for budgets with sufficient resources for these social programs; we even voted to double the money allocated to senior citizens in 2024, who now receive 6 thousand pesos every two months,” he stressed.
“With this social policy, the number of people living in poverty rose from 49 percent in 2020 to 36.2 percent in 2022: almost 9 million people were lifted out of poverty. ‘For the good of all, the poor first’ became a reality and is yielding positive results.”
Reiterative in his allusions to the president-elect, whom he called “our leader,” Puente highlighted that Sheinbaum obtained 36 million votes on June 2, which in itself “represents a profound change in our political system. This reconfiguration of politics and public life began with the leadership of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to whom we express our recognition and our support until the last day of his government. We recognize his leadership and his tireless struggle to build a country with social justice.”
The coordinator of the green bench in San Lázaro stressed that the main risks facing humanity today are related to climate change, which is affecting global stability and endangering the future of the planet.
To face this situation, “we must take more decisive action. That is why we have supported Claudia Sheinbaum from the start, who is a scientist, intelligent, prepared, and whose environmental training makes us proud. Given the risks of climate change, Sheinbaum’s figure becomes more relevant, because she has dedicated herself to studying it, but she has also implemented public policies to confront it.”
