EPuttur Zoological Park in Thrissur, India’s first designer zoo, will open soon. The Central Zoo Authority has received permission to transfer the animals from Thrissur Zoo to the Zoological Park. 439 species of birds and animals existing in Thrissur will be shifted to Puttur in several phases. Efforts are being made to bring animals this month. Minister K at Zoological Park on Friday to take a decision on this. An emergency meeting has been called in Rajan’s presence. Park Director R. Kirti, Special Officer K.J. Varghese and various officials will participate.
The authorities are trying to shift the animals of the Thrissur Zoo to the spacious Puthur and bring the animals from other places to the Puthur Zoological Park. Birds are first shifted from Thrissur to Puttur. This will also start the transformation of the zoo in the city. The permission was granted after consideration of the application submitted jointly by the zoological park authorities and the director of the state zoo department to the central zoo authority. The process was delayed due to some technical reasons. 80 percent of the construction of the park in Puttur has been completed. Apart from habitats for birds, monkeys, bison, crocodiles, deer, tigers, giraffes etc., the construction of Orientation Centre, Ticket Counter, Elevated Walkway and Diversity Center has been completed.
Construction of roads inside the park is currently underway. About 25 new employees were hired on contract basis. Steps have also been taken to appoint security guards. In cases where the forest department cannot return to the forest after reaching the inhabited areas and catching them, the animals kept under protection in various centers can now be brought to Puthur. The tiger cub brought from Palakkad to Ailur is fully healthy in Puttur. The tiger cub will also continue to be protected here.
The activities of various agencies assigned to bring various animals from outside Kerala are also progressing rapidly. The authorities hope to open the park early next year. The zoological park is being set up at a cost of Rs 300 crore on 350 acres of land in Puttur by recreating the natural habitat of animals and birds.. According to available information, this is the largest zoological park in Asia. Designed by renowned Australian zoo designer John Coe, Puttur Zoological Park also has the distinction of being India’s first designer zoo.
The main attraction of the new zoo is the special enclosures to exhibit wildlife in their natural habitat. Around 23 such places have been set up in Puttur Zoological Park. Three of these are vast special habitats for different species of birds. It also has a veterinary hospital complex and feeding centers for animals. For the visitors of the park, the construction works of animal viewing galleries, spacious parking lot, reception and orientation center, service roads, tram roads, visitor lanes, tram stations, cafeteria, administrative office complex, quarters and toilet blocks are almost complete.
