August 18, 2020, Karim Keïta is arrested by soldiers who took power in Bamako and pushed his father IBK to resign.
Karim Keïta’s house attacked
Karim Keïta’s house is located not far from that of President IBK. The police did not let the demonstrators attack the latter, but they abandoned the securing of that of Karim Keïta, which explains why many demonstrators were able to enter it.
One of the most viral videos was filmed in one of the homes of Karim Keïta, son of President IBK, located in the Sébénikoro district of Bamako. We see dozens of people jumping into the pool while others, present in the garden, circulate objects in their hands, probably looted from the house. In one of the videos filmed on site, we can hear a man congratulating himself on this “pool of change”.

The putsch consummated, the ECOWAS hardens the tone
The soldiers who took power announced the creation of a “National Committee for the Salvation of the People” and affirmed their intention to put in place a civilian political transition leading to general elections within a “reasonable time”.
The Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the overthrow of Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and his government. The air and land borders between its members and the country have been closed. She said in a statement to have also suspended all financial exchanges between its 15 members and Mali, and excluded the latter from the decision-making bodies of the community.
