Russian President Vladimir Putin threatening countries that impose a no -fly zone above Ukraine. These countries would be considered by Moscow to have entered the conflict.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had pleaded with the West to support a no-fly zone because of his country’s position under siege due to the Russian invasion. But so far that appeal has been ruled out over fears it could escalate into a wider war with Russia.
Putin warned that imposing a no-fly zone would have “colossal and catastrophic consequences not only for Europe but also for the whole world”.
“Any movement in this direction will be considered by us as participation in armed conflict by the country,” Putin said during a meeting with employees of the national airline Aeroflot.
With Moscow’s military offensive in its second week, the economic and humanitarian toll of the war has increased, prompting civilians to flee.
Even so, Putin dismissed rumors that the Kremlin was planning to declare martial law in Russia.
“Military law should only be introduced in cases where there is external aggression … we are not experiencing it at the moment and I hope we will not be,” he said.
