Putin’s Statement on Russia’s Potential Cancellation of Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and Concerns of Nuclear Testing Resumption

Speaking at a propaganda event billed as a forum of foreign “political experts,” Putin said the United States has signed but not ratified the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

The dictator added that Moscow could also decide to cancel the ratification.

The USSR last conducted a nuclear test in 1990, shortly before its collapse. Russia, the successor to the rights of the USSR, has not conducted any nuclear tests and in 2000 ratified the treaty banning them.

Putin made his announcement at a time when there are increasingly frequent warnings that Russia could resume nuclear tests in an attempt to intimidate the West and force it to stop military aid to Ukraine.

Putin said that despite the recommendations of some experts to resume nuclear tests, he had not yet come to an “informed opinion” on the matter.
