Positioning itself as the most democratic country in the world, which is no stranger to the persecution of dissenters, the propagandists, of course, withheld the news that the well-known writer and playwright Ivan Viripayev, whose plays have also been staged in Latvian theaters and who currently lives in Poland, was sentenced to eight years in prison in absentia for spreading false news about Russian army.
Putin’s main messages
In a four-hour press conference attended only by ideologically loyal journalists with pre-prepared questions, Putin expressed his main views on Russia’s domestic and foreign policy.
The main thing, of course, affected the war in Ukraine, which Putin announced: the goals have not changed and peace will be possible only when they are achieved. Namely, these goals are the de-Nazification of Ukraine, demilitarization, replacement of the ruling power and Ukraine’s neutrality, which means that Ukraine, according to Putin, has no right to join NATO. Putin emphasized that Ukraine, by honoring the memory of Bandera (one of the leaders of the Ukrainian nationalist movement from the 1930s to the 1950s), had clearly proven itself as a Nazi state.
Putin once again repeated the mantra that the war in Ukraine was provoked by the West, led by the USA, which allegedly carried out a “coup d’état” in Ukraine in 2014. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is said to have been purely self-defense, as well as the defense of the Russians living in Donetsk.
Putin called a lot on the “traditional values” defended by Russia, and emphasized that the war in Ukraine is a global conflict that will decide what the future of the world will be – either one in which the hegemony of the United States will still rule, or a multipolar one in which countries will be equal partners. Putin forgot to add that in this “multipolar world” only the big countries will be important, and the small countries will be only their satellites, divided by the zones of interest of the big powers.
