Putin’s Decree Replaces Smolensk Region Governor: EADaily

President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has appointed Vasily Anokhin as Acting Governor of the Smolensk Region.

The corresponding decree of the head of state published on Friday, March 17 on the website of the Kremlin press service. From the text of the document it follows that the former head of the region Alexey Ostrovsky dismissed of his own free will.

Ostrovsky stayed in office for almost 11 years. Before becoming governor, he was a member of the State Duma for eight years.

In 2012, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev appointed him acting regional governor, and later the regional parliament approved Ostrovsky in this position.

During his tenure, the Gross Regional Product (GRP) of the Smolensk region, according to Rosstat, increased by 2.1 times. GRP per capita increased by 2.2 times.

As for Vasily Anokhin, he previously served as director of the regional development department of the Russian government, and also worked as deputy head of the secretariat of Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

The decree on his appointment to the post of Acting Governor of the Smolensk Region came into force from the moment it was signed by the President of Russia.
