No capital is too far for Putin’s army. War has come to Europe again and history is calling us to help Ukraine to stop it [агресията на] Putin.
This was stated by the Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielus Landsbergis in an interview with Ouest-France. He pointed out that the demands of the Ukrainian forces are very clear: modern weapons, including long-range missiles. This need is urgent because “we have very little time,” the diplomat said.
More news from Ukraine
Landsbergis believes that the endless debates are weakening Europe at a time when war is so close. He called on European countries to “act” because the situation at the front for Ukrainians is not improving, although they are showing incredible courage. The geographical fact is that the front line in Ukraine is comparable to the distance between Vilnius and London, the minister pointed out as an argument against those voices in Europe who claim that “this war will not reach us”.
Landsbergis said that Europe should help Kiev with ammunition to avoid a catastrophe on the front. Asked about the Czech initiative to buy 800,000 rounds for the ZSU, the Lithuanian foreign minister replied: “Why is it up to the Czech Republic or small countries on the eastern flank to do this when we have big allies who could find a solution? I’m happy that the Czech Republic found a solution… I hope others do too [да намерят такова]“.
Regarding French President Emmanuel Macron’s words that NATO could send ground forces to Ukraine in the future, Landsbergis said that “now is the right time to discuss [на този въпрос]because just starting a conversation about this topic removes the red lines we’ve imposed on ourselves.”
Russian propaganda claims that a nuclear power cannot lose a war, but Landsbergis recalled how the Russians lost the Cold War, as well as in Afghanistan. “If Russia is not stopped, if Ukraine is forced to negotiate on unfavorable terms, it means that this is just a pause, not a full stop. No one in the region believes that Putin wants to end the war,” the diplomat said. If Putin wins in Ukraine, it will be an invitation to other autocrats and terrorists around the world to be bolder.
Ukraine needs weapons. And immediately.
