Putin won’t make peace in Ukraine without seeing 2024 presidential election results

A senior official from the US State Department assessed that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not make peace in Ukraine without seeing the results of the US presidential election to be held in November 2024.

Donald Trump, who is at the forefront among the current candidates of the Republican Party according to public opinion polls, harshly criticizes the financial and military support Washington provides to Kiev.

Briefing the press after the NATO foreign ministers meeting held in Brussels, the official noted that the alliance supported Ukraine knowing that there was no possibility of a peace agreement within the next year.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “My expectation is that Russian leader Vladimir Putin will not make peace or a meaningful peace without seeing our election results.” he said.

When asked whether these statements reflected his personal opinion or the official opinion of the American government, he replied that this was “a widely accepted opinion” in the United States.

The same official, without mentioning Trump’s name and without clearly stating how the 2024 US Presidential Election results will affect support for Ukraine, stated that “At Tuesday’s NATO meeting, the allies expressed their strong support for Ukraine in this context.”

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in November finds Trump and current President Joe Biden in a tight race.

Likewise, the survey shows that when participants were asked to choose between the two names, Trump was ahead of Biden, 51 percent to 49 percent.
