The hosts reassure the other participants that the Russian president will only appear on screen
Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the G20 summit in Indonesia in November. The announcement was made by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi after talks with Indonesian President Joko Vidodo.
He said it was “impossible” for Putin to attend in person. “Vidodo was adamant that he would not come,” Draghi said. The Italian prime minister admitted that Putin could send a video message to the participants in the meeting.
The question of Putin’s presence has made it inconvenient for Western leaders to consider refusing to participate without offending the host country by boycotting the forum. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and EC President Ursula von der Leyen have made it clear over the past two days that they are willing to go to Indonesia despite Putin’s possible involvement.
