Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended until December 31, 2021 the embargo on food imports imposed by Moscow on Western countries in 2014 in response to their sanctions against Russia following the annexation of Crimea.
The embargo was imposed in August 2014 on the European Union (EU), the USA, Australia, Norway and Canada, a year later also on Albania, Montenegro, Iceland and Liechtenstein, but from the beginning of 2016 – also on Ukraine.
Initially, the import ban was imposed for one year, but was later extended several times, and in June last year, Putin extended it until December 31, 2020.
In June, the EU extended sanctions on Russia for another six months.
