Sergiy Stakhovskyrenowned Ukrainian tennis player, decided to leave his vacation in Dubai next to his family to return to his country and join the Army reservists who are defending the capital Kiev.

It is impossible to make such a decision without hesitation. I have a wife and three children… If I stayed at home, I would feel culpable for not having returned (to Ukraine), and now that I am here, I feel culpable for leaving them at home,” he said in an interview with CNN.

The athlete explained the difficulty and reaction of his wife when he found out that he would return to Ukraine to fight: “Of course, she was angry. She understood (what was) the reason for me, but for her it was a betrayal. And I totally understand why she feels that way.”

His children, all under the age of 7, believe that he is in a tennis tournament, since neither Sergiy nor his wife informed them of the reason for his departure: “My wife did not tell them and I did not tell them where I am going… I guess they’ll find out soon”.
