President Russia Vladimir Putin promised a firm military response to the series of attacks launched Ukraine at the border of his country during the presidential election. Putin called the Kyiv attack an attempt to thwart his bid for re-election.
As reported AFPSaturday (16/3/2024), this statement was made by Putin when speaking before the Russian Security Council on Friday (15/3), or the first day of a total of three days of voting in Russian presidential election This year. Voting will be held from March 15 to March 17 tomorrow.
Apart from being held on Russian territory, voting was also held in areas of Ukraine occupied by Moscow troops. Putin is predicted to win easily with no opposition presidential candidate running.
A series of drone and rocket attacks from Ukraine rained down on the Russian border during the presidential election. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that its troops managed to shoot down five drones and nine rockets in the border area of Belgorod and the Kaluga region, southwest of the capital Moscow.
Putin, in his statement, promised a tough response to a wave of Ukrainian airstrikes in the Belgorod and Kursk border regions, which have also been the scene of heavy fighting in recent days with pro-Kyiv sabotage groups.
“These enemy attacks will not go unpunished,” Putin said in a statement broadcast on Russian state television.
“This is an attempt to disrupt the presidential election,” said the 71-year-old Russian leader.
