President Russia Vladimir Putin will meet with the President Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in Moscow on Friday (11/3). The meeting took place in the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to a report by the Belarusian news agency Belta, which was reported by AFPLukashenko and Putin will discuss issues related to bilateral relations, the development of Russian and Belarusian cooperation, economic cooperation under pressure of sanctions, as well as the situation in the region and Ukraine.
Belarus itself is an ally of Russia and is the launching point for Russian troops into Ukraine. In addition, the former Soviet state was reported to have also mobilized its troops.
No doubt, a number of countries also imposed sanctions on Belarus. France’s EU presidency said in a statement that the sanctions would cover a number of economic sectors. The president posted the statement on his Twitter account.
“(Sanctions will be applied to) some sectors of the economy, and in particular timber, steel and potash,” the French Presidency in the European Union said in a statement.
The Japanese government also imposed sanctions in the form of restrictions on import-export trade with Russia.
