US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday that the consequences would be dire for Russia if it used nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

Blinken added that such messages were communicated to the Russian leadership publicly and privately.

The warning from the NATO nation comes after Vladimir Putin’s speech a week ago, in which he announced the partial mobilization of Russian reserve troops and criticized several senior officials in NATO countries for arguing that the deployment of nuclear weapons against Russia was justified.

Putin stressed that such a move would not be left unanswered by Russia, noting that Russia has its own arsenal of destructive weapons, some of which outnumber its Western rivals.

“If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all means at our disposal to defend Russia and our people. It is not a bluff,” Putin said in his speech.

Over the past week, the United States and its allies have stepped up intelligence gathering and surveillance over concerns that Russia is deciding to deploy nuclear weapons.

According to US officials, with whom he spoke Politic, the monitoring of Russian air, space and IT units in Ukraine which could potentially receive nuclear orders from the Kremlin has been increased, with particular attention also to the western exclaves of Russia; Kaliningrad.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov reiterated last week: “We do not threaten anyone with nuclear weapons”.

He referred reporters to the Russian military doctrine, according to which nuclear weapons can only be used if such or other weapons of mass destruction are targeted at his country or if his country is facing an existential threat from conventional weapons.
