Putin: Those Behind Crocus City Hall Terrorist Attack Aim to Damage Russian Unity

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that those who ordered the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall were going to “damage the unity” of Russians. He said this while speaking at the congress of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia on April 4, reports Interfax.

“Judging by what the investigation is now providing, we have every reason to believe that the main goal of those who ordered the bloody, terrible terrorist act in Moscow was precisely to damage our unity. There are no other goals visible, there are none, because Russia cannot be the target of terrorist attacks by Islamic fundamentalists,” Putin said.

According to the president, Russia demonstrates a unique example of interfaith harmony and unity, interreligious and interethnic unity. “And in the external arena, it (Russia) behaves in such a way that it can hardly be an object of attack from Islamic fundamentalists,” Putin added.

A cell of the terrorist organization “Islamic State” called “Vilayat Khorasan” claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack in Crocus City Hall. The Russian authorities claim without evidence that Ukraine is behind the terrorist attack. The Ukrainian authorities deny involvement in the terrorist attack on Crocus.

Russia has repeatedly become a target of Islamic State terrorists in recent years. The militants carried out the largest terrorist attack against Russia in October 2015, blowing up a plane of the Russian airline Kogalymavia flying from Egypt to St. Petersburg. 224 people on board were killed. In August 2017, an ISIS terrorist in Surgut attacked passers-by with a knife, injuring eight people. In 2018, an Islamic State militant opened fire at an Orthodox church in Kizlyar, killing five people and injuring five.
