Twenty tons of grain are stopped in the port of Odessa blocked by the Russians. Behind is the plan of Putin to force the West to withdraw the sanctions against the Russia. How? By causing widespread food shortages around the world and putting pressure on Europe with an unprecedented wave of migration. This is the hypothesis supported by historian Timothy Snyder, a professor at Yale University.
Putin wants to unleash a global famine
Snyder highlights the consequences that the blockade of the grain Ukrainian could have at European and world level. Ukraine is one of the main producers of wheat, mainly supplying countries in the Middle East and Asia. In these countries, the blockade of supplies from Kiev could cause a real one food shortages with large effects on the population: “When the food riots begin, and with the spread of hunger, Russian propaganda will blame Ukraine and demand the recognition of Russia’s territorial conquests in Ukraine and the lifting of all sanctions,” says Snyder.
Negotiation with the United Nations
Le United Nations are negotiating with Russia to allow export of Ukrainian grain supplies, which are currently blocked in ports. The loss of exports from the country has already increased food shortages in some areas of the world. However the United States is skeptical on Russia’s intentions in the negotiations, also because Moscow has repeatedly targeted and destroyed food supplies. “It is difficult to see Russian offers in good faith, considering how they are actively and intentionally destroying food products in Ukraine and exacerbating global food insecurity,” a US official told Politico last week. In short, Putin seems determined to continue his plan.
