Peter Stano, the Commission’s foreign affairs representative, gave a resounding response to Vladimir Putin after the Russian president’s speech. In it, Putin warned Western countries that they risked a nuclear war if they send troops to fight in Ukraine, warning that Moscow has the weapons to hit targets in the West.
«He continues to deceive his own nation and tries to continue to deceive the international public if there is still anyone listening to himStano pointed out. He noted that Putin’s speech is part of his bid for re-election as well as another of many examples of his attempts to deny responsibility for the war he started in Ukraine.
“It was another chance for him to channel the well-known liesPeter Stano emphasized, underlining that “he started the war against Ukraine, he is responsible for all the consequences, internally in Russia, regionally in Ukraine, but also on the world stage”.
“Peaceful and comprehensive resolution of the conflict around Transnistria”
Peter Stano was also asked about Transnistrian representatives’ appeal to Russia for protection from Moldovan pressure. As he mentioned, the European Commission is following the developments in Moldova very closely.
“We believe that stability in this region is in the interest first of all of the citizens on both sides of the Dniester River and in this context we encourage both sides to engage in a constructive dialogue,” he stressed. As he said there is constant communication with the government and authorities of Moldova and that there is confidence that they will do everything to handle the current situation.
“The EU continues to support the peaceful and comprehensive resolution of the conflict around Transnistria, which we approach on the basis of respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova,” concluded Peter Stano.
